COMMANDEER (aka Shanghai, aka Cipher) Chapter One: Through the Shadows [working title] This is the origin of G.I. Joe's greatest--and worst--team-member. PREVIOUSLY... - SHIROHEN NAGAMITSU'S father, an American Army soldier stationed in Japan, marries a runaway girl.
- Shirohen Nagamitsu is born.
- While still very young, his mother's family, the ARASHIKAGE NINJA CLAN, finds them and forces them to return. Meanwhile his father is transfered back to the U.S.
- Raised by Arashikage Clan, and though younger, he still lives/trains there at the same time as the older SNAKE EYES and STORM SHADOW.
- Grows to idolize Snake Eyes.
- When the Hard Master is killed, presumably by Storm Shadow, Shirohen follows his idol to America and enlists in the Armed Forces.
- Develops a special talent for being able to effectively use any weapon, vehicle or piece of equipment necessary.
- Shiro becomes a top Green Beret and is used for many successful Special/Black Ops missions.
1981-1982 ("Night Creeper" Commandeer) - Shiro successfully infiltrates the organization that will later be known as the NIGHT CREEPERS, under orders, his mission is to gather intelligence.
- By learning and adjusting to the enemy's "code of ethics" he easily gains their trust.
YEAR TWO (1982) - Must be pulled out before he rises too high in their ranks and draws too much attention to himself.
- Mission is otherwise a critical success. The intel he gathers here is later used by the Joe-team in their battles against the Night Creepers.
1983-1984 ("Red Ninja" Commandeer) - Shiro successfully infiltrates the elusive RED NINJA CLAN, under orders, due to their connection to the Arashikage Ninjas.
YEAR TWO (1984) - RED NINJA LEADER discovers Shiro is a spy. U.S. Military officially declares the mission a failure and backs out, stranding Shiro in hostile territory.
- Without U.S. involvement or knowledge, Shiro regretably implicates his own Arashikage Clan rather than the U.S. Armed Forces and escapes.
- Shiro returns to HQ with additional intel and the Red Ninja Leader's right arm. His mission status is later reversed to "Success."
Thus we have the origin of the man who would be my custom figure, if I were allowed to create ONE Joe for the Joe-Universe (that's the "rule" I used to designed "my" Joe). Next Chapter: The Joe That Never Was Attachments:

The Thin Green Line Chapter Two: The Joe That Never Was Find out how Shiro, Code Name: Commandeer, goes from being the next, greatest hope, to one of the Joes' worst enemies. He idolizes Snake Eyes, but after all Shiro's done, can the two ever truly become allies now? 1985-1987 ("Shanghai") - General HAWK, under orders, personally recruits Shiro to the Joe-team as their new Deep-Cover Agent.
- He is excited to finally get the chance to get to know Snake Eyes, but he assigned to field duty THE SAME DAY he is recruited. He never even is allowed to meet Duke, or the rest of the team.
- Posing a crooked lawyer with a juvenile history of street-gang involvement and using the Code Name: SHANGHAI, Shiro--now Commandeer, now Shanghai--makes himself known to the mercenary market as a security specialist.
- Picked up by a CRIMSON GUARD recruiting agency, he once again quickly rises through the ranks and gains the attention of leadership.
- TOMAX & XAMOT, the Crimson Twins, soon promote him through the ranks until he is finally Crimson General, answering directly to the Twins themselves.
- On a particular mission, Shanghai is paired with a Cobra mercenary and ordered to lead a diversionary attack on the Joe's CCHQ (Command Center Headquarters), while most of the Joes' officers are there in an intelligence meeting.
- Shanghai and his accomplice are also given a platoon of prototype-B.A.T.'s and ordered to "test their limits."
- Greeted by G.I. Joe leadership almost in its entirety, Shanghai eagerly tries to reach a "stalemate" and withdraw, however his mercenary accomplice takes the risk sacrifices the entire B.A.T. army in order to destroy the CCHQ.
YEAR TWO (1986) - Shanghai commands the Crimson Guardsmen assigned to DR. MINDBENDER by the Twins, as the mad scientist begins hatching his scheme to create a new Cobra Emperor--Serpentor.
- Thanks to Shanghai/Commandeer's leaked intel, the Joes learn of one of Mindbender's mountain-laboratories.
- Believing Hawk when he tells them "not to worry, we've got a man on the inside on this one," the Joes take the offensive and launch an attack.
- Shanghai, ordered to cover Mindbender's retreat, manages to hold off the Joes long enough, but only to find himself surrounded and about to get captured (which he was ordered to NEVER let happen).
- Shanghai is forced shoot and fight his way out, however he cannot hide his Arashikage training from the Silent Master, Snake Eyes, who is there himself. Nor can he hide this fact from Storm Shadow, who is secretly spying on them all on behalf of Cobra Commander.
- Shanghai does manage to rescue his remaining fellow Crimson Guardsmen, however to do so, he must launch an RPG that destroys the Bridge-Layer.
- Returning to Cobra with his rescued CG's, he is treated as a "hero" and later learns that TOLLBOOTH was killed inside the Bridgelayer.
YEAR THREE (1987) - Shanghai is left in command of one of Cobra's smaller Terrordromes in the absence of available senior officers.
- Storm Shadow, having continued to spy on Shanghai for his own reasons, confronts Shanghai about his Arashikage connection.
- Storm Shadow even manages to connect Shanghai to a rumored "Night Creeper operation" in '82 and a "Red Ninja operation" in '84.
- Shanghai, angered by Storm Shadow's apparent betrayal of the Arashikage, attacks, which unfortunately makes it seem as if he has something to hide--which he obviously does.
- As he starts to realize he isn't skilled enough to defeat Storm Shadow, he prepares himself to enact his own personal back-up plan and escape.
- Luckily, FIREFLY intervenes, having been spying on Storm Shadow and Shanghai both, for his own reasons.
- Shanghai uses the momentary confusion to arm the Terordrome's self-destruct and upload false evidence to implicate SCRAP IRON as a possible security leak, as well as steal his weapons designs.
- Storm Shadow and Firefly manage to escape alive, but Shanghai uses the opportunity to fake his own death and go underground for a while. During this time, his superiors become increasingly nervous as he remains out of contact.
And that concludes the story of Shanghai's "Cobra Years." Next Chapter: Never Going Home Attachments:

The Thin Green Line Chapter Three: Never Going Home Barely escaping detection among Cobra, Shiro goes underground and works his way into the Iron Grenadiers, although without the approval of his superiors. Meanwhile his past gets closer and closer to catching up with him. 1988-1990 ("Cipher") - Shiro/Commandeer, remaining out of contact with his superiors until now, resurfaces among DESTRO'S newly formed IRON GRENADIERS, now using the Code Name: Cipher.
- He now poses as a weapons specialist and weapons designer, using many of Scrap Iron's stolen schematics to make a name for himself with Destro.
- In particular, Cipher's plans for the mobile outposts, the De.S.O.L.A.T.O.R.s (Deployable Strategic Outpost for Land/Air Tactical Ordnance Reinforcement)--which of course were actually Scrap Iron's, and intended for MARS and Cobra anyway--gain him much respect from his peers.
- Cipher also suggests a way to tame the Iron Grenadiers' ranks and create the new division necessary to pilot the new DeSOLATORs. Grenadiers who show signs of "difficult" psychological profiles are transferred to the IRON BOMBARDIERS--there they are given extensive mental conditioning disguised as rigourous training, and outfitted with napalm-filled "suicide-suits." Ordered to defend their DeSOLATOR with their lives, they alone make attacking a DeSOLATOR barely worth it.
YEAR TWO (1989) - Cipher remains behind the scenes and avoids joining conflicts personally as much as possible, though he does prove himself an effective defensive tactician and was able to save IG resources from the jaws of depletion on numerous occasions.
- Despite his lack of field experience, he is soon promoted to Fleet Commander of Destro's now rather large DeSOLATOR army, and he quickly learns how to use the position to his advantage and refrain from engaging his "real" teammates anymore.
YEAR THREE (1990) - Cipher, along with a mercenary accomplice that he once worked with for Cobra, as lowest ranking commanders of Destro's general forces, are both assigned control of a large regiment of various IG soldiers, as well as almost the entire DeSOLATOR Fleet.
- With the rest of IG leadership unavailable, their mission is simply to relocate the forces under their control to a predesignated, more strategic position.
- Once again, however, thanks to Cipher/Commandeer's intel, the Joes stage a surprise attack.
- Cipher and his accomplice quickly find themselves outmatched, and--wishing to avoid any more direct conflicts--Cipher attempts to issue the orders to organize an effective retreat, and possibly save even more IG resources.
- Cipher's mercenary accomplice, however, has different plans, and he makes one final, extremely risky counter-attack.
- The counter-attack gives Snake Eyes the time he needs to secretly board Cipher's DeSOLATOR and confront Cipher for the first time--again!
- Once again Snake Eyes detects his Arashikage training, and probably even realizes that Cipher and Shanghai are one in the same already.
- Cipher's mercenary accomplice takes advantage of Snake Eyes' momentary preoccupation and knocks the ninja out, allowing them both to escape.
- The mercenary sets the DeSOLATOR's self-destruct and sacrifices the entire ground fleet as he deploys the NDS (Napalm Defense System), though the Joes are employing napalm-resistant armor and gear.
- Meanwhile Cipher separates himself from his mercenary accomplice and returns to save Snake Eyes' life before the self-destruct goes off.
- Cipher cannot find Snake Eyes' body, nor does he realize that the ninja is watching from the shadows, wondering why he returned to save him.
- Having once again exposed himself too much to feel comfortable, Shiro is preparing to fake his own death and disappear a second time--determined to make the best use of his deployment and redeem himself.
- Just before he can do so, he finally receives the call from HQ that he never thought he'd hear.... He was being called in from the field... to serve with the Joe-team proper.
- Shiro makes no response, and it appears he has gone incommunicado again.
Thus the "Iron Grenadier Years" draw to a close... and Shiro finds himself assigned to his most difficult mission yet. There are very few Cobra soldiers that can claim the infamous, hated title of "Joe-killer..." and the G.I. Joe team-member Commandeer is one of them.... Next Chapter: My Killer's Keeper Attachments:
